What is a Nakshatra?

The Vedic zodiac is divided into 27 Nakshatras — lunar mansions of 13 degrees 20 minutes each. Your Janma Nakshatra is whichever mansion the Moon occupied at your birth. It is one of the most important factors in a Vedic chart, determining your Dasha sequence, instinctive temperament, and the nature the soul is working with in this lifetime.

Each Nakshatra has a ruling planet (Nakshatra lord), a presiding deity, a symbol, a nature (Deva, Manushya, or Rakshasa), and a set of qualities. Your Nakshatra lord's placement in your chart is one of the first things a Jyotishi examines — it reveals the underlying tone of your entire life.

Common questions

What is a Nakshatra?

A Nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions in Vedic astrology. Your Janma Nakshatra is the one the Moon occupied at your birth. It determines your Vimshottari Dasha sequence, reveals your instinctive nature and emotional needs, and is used in everything from daily muhurta to marriage matching.

How is Nakshatra different from Rashi?

Your Rashi is your Moon sign — one of 12. Your Nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions that subdivide those signs. Each Rashi contains roughly 2 to 2.5 Nakshatras. The Nakshatra is more specific and considered more personal — two people with the same Rashi can have very different charts if they are born in different Nakshatras.

What is a Pada?

Each Nakshatra is divided into 4 Padas (quarters). Your Pada adds another level of precision — each Pada maps to one Navamsa sign, revealing nuances around relationships, dharma, and karma that the Nakshatra alone doesn't show. Our calculator includes your Pada automatically.

Do I need my birth time to find my Nakshatra?

Usually not. The Moon stays in each Nakshatra for roughly 24 hours, so your date of birth is sufficient in most cases. If you were born near a Nakshatra transition, a birth time will give a more exact result. For Pada precision, a birth time helps significantly.
