Mangal Dosha occurs when Mars (Mangal) is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the Vedic birth chart, calculated from the Lagna (ascendant), the Moon sign, or Venus. Mars in these houses is traditionally associated with intensity and conflict in the area of marriage and partnerships — because these houses relate to the self, family, home, spouse, longevity, and bed pleasures.
It is one of the most commonly checked factors before marriage in Indian families. However, its actual significance is frequently overstated. Approximately half the population has Mars in one of these six houses — and many classical texts list conditions that fully cancel the dosha.
1st House
Lagna
Mars in the self — drives assertiveness and can create a dominating temperament in partnership.
2nd House
Wealth and Family
Mars in the family house — can create conflicts within the family unit and speech that wounds.
4th House
Home and Happiness
Mars in the home — can create domestic tension, instability in the household, and property disputes.
7th House
Marriage and Partner
Mars directly in the house of the spouse — the strongest dosha placement, often felt most acutely.
8th House
Longevity and Transformation
Mars in the house of longevity — associated with health challenges in the partner and sudden events.
12th House
Loss and Liberation
Mars in the house of bed pleasures and loss — can create dissatisfaction and distance in marriage.
Many conditions cancel Mangal Dosha. If any of the following apply, the dosha is considered neutralised or greatly reduced.
Mars is in its own sign — Aries (Mesha) or Scorpio (Vrishchika)
Mars is in the sign of its exaltation — Capricorn (Makara)
Both partners have Mangal Dosha — the doshas cancel each other
Mars is in the 2nd house for Gemini or Virgo Lagna
Mars is in the 12th house for Taurus or Libra Lagna
Mars is aspected by Jupiter — the benefic reduces the intensity
Mars is in the 4th or 8th house for Cancer or Leo Lagna
Venus is strong and aspecting the 7th house lord
Mangal Dosha (Kuja Dosha or Manglik Dosha) occurs when Mars is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the birth chart from the Lagna, Moon, or Venus. It is traditionally associated with intensity in relationships and is checked before marriage in many Indian families.
Very common. With six out of twelve houses qualifying, roughly 50% of all charts have Mars in a dosha house from at least one reference point (Lagna, Moon, or Venus). This is one reason classical texts list so many cancellations — the dosha in its full form is far less prevalent than the raw statistics suggest.
Yes. Classical Jyotish recognises numerous cancellation conditions — Mars in its own or exalted sign, both partners having the dosha, specific Lagna-house combinations, benefic aspects on Mars, and others. Our calculator checks all major cancellation rules automatically and tells you whether your dosha is cancelled.
A birth time is needed to determine the Lagna accurately, which is one of the three reference points for the check. Without a birth time, the calculator checks from the Moon sign and Venus only. For a complete result including the Lagna check, an approximate birth time (even within an hour) significantly improves accuracy.
